The Artist: Cristiana Vignatelli Bruni
As a globetrotter in her early twenties, Vignatelli Bruni spent several years in London where she grew her fascination for ceramics. Here, she delved deeper into the processing of stoneware and porcelain and started her studies on the chemistry of glazes. This passion for art led her back to Italy to pursue her degree in History of Contemporary Art. Simultaneously, she began her journey in the field of teaching and exhibiting art and design works. Her works have since been exhibited in various galleries, design showrooms, and museums in Italy and abroad.
The Story Behind the Art
Vignatelli Bruni's artistic journey can be traced back to her childhood where she found an escape in drawing and ceramics. As she grew older, her fascination with ceramics intensified, leading her to explore more advanced techniques. Her artistry took on a new dimension in 2016, during an art residency at the EKWC European Ceramic Workcenter in The Netherlands. Here, she began experimenting with sound in her ceramic installations, creating an immersive experience for her audience. One of her most significant works is 'Riss,' a ceramic installation that incorporates sound as a medium. The four hollowed columns in the installation act as resonant boards for recorded sounds, activated by the movement and proximity of viewers.
Inspiration and Artistic Style
Vignatelli Bruni's art is fueled by the process of creation. She values the space for mistakes and new directions that emerges from the act of doing. Her distinctive style is often described as biomorphic, reflecting the forms of nature. However, she explains that this is not intentional. Instead, her art is a three-dimensional reflection on invisible forces through the means of chemistry, minerals, drawings, sound, and resonant shapes. The final arrangement of her pieces often possesses a degree of randomness, making each piece unique.
Future Plans and Goals
Looking ahead, Vignatelli Bruni aspires to blur the lines between the roles of the artist, architect, artisan, designer, and musician. She hopes to foster more cooperation and less professional division in these fields, creating a unified playground for the interactions of everyday life.
Engaging with the Audience
Vignatelli Bruni believes in connecting directly with her audience. She prefers physical contact with collectors, clients, and curators, often involving them in the artistic process of creation. Her clients become active participants in her art, contributing to the choice of materials, textures, shapes, and colors.
Vignatelli Bruni's Unique Contribution to the Art Industry
Vignatelli Bruni stands out in the art industry through her exploration of the relationship between sound and materiality. She sees art as a system of relations, an intertwining between the material and immaterial. Through her work, she seeks to evoke the ritual power of objects and their capacity to contain memories, desires, and create connections. Her work is a continuous investigation of the construction and deconstruction of formal, chromatic, sonic material. Whether it is about sculptural works, installations, performances, or design functional objects, every project fixes a point in this movement.
